The Pork Sausage Scheme was launched in 2002 with the aim of increasing the use of British Farm Assured Pork and the use of the Quality Mark on retail packs of finished product. The number of participating members is relatively small. However, several of the major manufacturers of pork sausage in the UK are actively involved in this scheme.
Companies that wish to participate in the Scheme are required to be either a member of the BMPA and hold a current certificate of evaluation to the BMPA Standard, or registered with the BMPA and meet the requirements of the BMPA Standard. The British Meat Processors Association is the holder of the Standard.
The Standard describes the quality standards and processing procedures for the manufacture of pork sausage. An essential criterion is that all raw pork material must be of British Farm Assured origin.
The BMPA Pork Sausage Scheme is currently not certificated to EN45011.
EFSIS manages the inspection programme for the BMPA Pork Sausage Scheme.
Participating sites are required to have two inspections annually, one of which is incorporated into the annual BMPA/EFSIS evaluation.
