The operating procedures for the Product Quality Certification Scheme for British Quality Assured Pork is incorporated as an approved scheme under EN 45011. The objective of the certification system is to provide, through approved certification, a means by which quality assured pigmeat products can be supplied to retailers, wholesalers and caterers, and through them to the consumers.
Operating standards are in place for the approval of suppliers of British Quality Assured Pork. Establishments that wish to participate in the BQAP Scheme must meet the standards as laid down in the BQAP Operating Manual. These cover the operational procedures and practices for pork and pork products, and the standards for the production environment and for the distribution of pork and pork products. An integral part of the Standard requires the company to be able to demonstrate rigorous traceability of qualifying product with the system undergoing independent monitoring at a minimum level of once a month. The company must also demonstrate that the operational procedures are supported by a Quality Management System which incorporates HACCP.
EFSIS manages the certification and the inspection programme of the BQAP Scheme.
Each participating plant is required to have an annual and a six-monthly surveillance inspection.
